Middle to Late Middle Ages.
1. Early Middle Ages (c. 500–1000 CE) Unit 1 - just completed.
- Also called the Dark Ages, this period began after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 CE).
- Characterized by feudalism, decentralized rule, and frequent invasions (Vikings, Magyars, and Muslims).
- The spread of Christianity and the rise of powerful kingdoms like the Franks under Charlemagne (c. 800 CE).
2. High (or Middle) Middle Ages (c. 1000–1300 CE)
- A time of economic growth, population expansion, and the strengthening of kingdoms.
- The feudal system and manorialism dominated society.
- The Crusades (1096–1291) took place, along with the rise of universities and Gothic architecture.
- The Catholic Church held immense power.
3. Late Middle Ages (c. 1300–1500 CE)
- Marked by crises, including the Black Death (1347–1351), the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453), and the weakening of feudalism.
- The rise of nation-states, early capitalism, and the Renaissance began in Italy.
- This period transitions into the Early Modern Era, with events like the fall of Constantinople (1453) and Christopher Columbus's voyages (1492).
