1. Introduction & Historical Connections
Catan’s gameplay connects to the Early Middle Ages.
Settlement & Expansion → Viking, Frankish, Anglo-Saxon, and Celtic Societies
- Each of these groups settled land, built villages, and expanded their influence.
- How did geography impact their survival and success?
Resources → Economy & Trade in the Early Middle Ages.
- Vikings relied on timber, iron, and fish for trade.
- The Franks and Anglo-Saxons depended on agriculture and livestock.
- The Celts used stone, wood, and wool for construction and survival.
- How does Catan’s resource system mirror medieval economies?
Trade & Conflict → Diplomacy and Raiding
- The Vikings were known for raids but also trade.
- Anglo-Saxons and Franks engaged in alliances and warfare.
- How does trading in Catan reflect real medieval trade and conflict?
2. Quick Catan Rules Overview (10 min)
- Objective: Be the first to reach 10 points by building settlements, cities, and roads.
- Turn Order:
- Roll dice for resources.
- Collect resources based on settlements.
- Trade with others or use the bank.
- Build roads, settlements, or upgrade to cities.
- The Robber: Represents raiders or Viking attacks—blocks resources from one hex.
3. Playtime
- Groups of four play Catan, keeping historical connections in mind.
- Encourage students to adopt roles (e.g., a Viking trader, a Frankish farmer) while playing.
4. Debrief & Discussion (10 min)
- How did Catan reflect medieval trade and expansion?
- Which resources were most valuable, and why?
- Did conflicts arise? How did alliances form?
- What strategies would the Vikings, Franks, Anglo-Saxons, or Celts use if they were playing Catan?
