Intro to the Plaque

The Black Death - Plaque Video.

🦠 Plague Today:

  • The plague still exists in the modern world, but it is rare and treatable with antibiotics.

  • It is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, the same one responsible for historic outbreaks.

  • There are about 1,000–2,000 cases worldwide reported each year (per WHO estimates).

🌍 Where It Still Occurs:

Plague cases still happen in parts of:

  • Madagascar

  • Democratic Republic of Congo

  • Peru

  • United States (mainly rural areas in the Southwest like Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado)

⚕️ Modern Context:

  • The disease is no longer considered a major global health threat.

  • Prompt antibiotic treatment usually leads to full recovery.

  • Public health systems are generally well-equipped to detect and manage outbreaks.

So yes — the plague still exists, but thanks to modern medicine and hygiene, it’s a very different reality than it was in the Middle Ages.
